Bat Mitzvah

Marker pen drawing, (11x14"), 1999

When a Jewish girl reaches the age of 12 or 13, she becomes a Bat Mitzvah, translated as "daughter of the commandments", when she can assume the responsibilities of the mitzvot (good deeds) of the Torah. During a traditional service on a Saturday morning, when the Torah is brought out from the ark, it is customary for the Bat Mitzvah to read a Haftorah, a reading from The Prophets, and for some, also to read directly from the Torah's parchment scroll.
