Torah Mantles At Temple Sinai - Atlanta, GA

Temple Sinai of Atlanta, GA commissioned Flora Rosefsky in 2007
to create a series of seven new Torah Mantle designs for their main sanctuary’s
ark area. The sewing of two strips for each Torah, using a wide variety of
needlepoint stitches, was executed by members of the Temple Sinai congregation.
The Torah Mantle designs complemented the rhythm and shapes of the synagogue’s
beautiful three-dimensional wood doors whose theme was inspired by the city
of Jerusalem. Repeating similar shapes of domed roofs or various buildings,
the needlepoint designs mirrored the “understated artistic elegance” that
Flora found the in the sanctuary, where floor to ceiling windows allowed
the natural world to interact with all those attending services. The Torah
support fabric of gold, sage green, and light blue recalled shades of nature
that represented earth, land and sky. Note that the special “Holocaust” Torah
Mantle was devoid of color, rather having an “absence of color” with
its whites, grays and some black threads. One of the Torahs has been
placed in the synagogue’s Chapel sanctuary.
